Young Business Achiever of the Year - Finalist!
Congratulations to Richard who has made it through to the final of the Young Business Achiever of the Year category at this year's Western Mail Business Awards.
Check out Richard's profile questions below:
Name: Richard Matthews
Company name: freshbaked Group
How long have you been with your current company?
Just over three years.
Who is your business role model?
Jamie Oliver – not only is he a successful modern day entrepreneur, a great leader and devoted family man but he is also an exceptional role model who has used his skills and public profile to help those less fortunate by contributing significant amounts of time, effort and money.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
freshbaked Group’s five year aim is to develop a family of businesses that have one common goal – the customer. We will continue to develop the freshbaked brand, become a leading player within existing markets and diversify into others where, as we have already proved, we can make a real difference.
Do you think there is a skills shortage among young people in Wales?
Yes, especially technical and practical skills. Communication, problem solving and customer skills are also a concern. I believe that a firm foundation in essential skills is crucial for everyone, but this is only the start of a life long learning process. Today’s and tomorrow’s economies demand ever-changing skills, qualifications and experience.
Do you think the education system adequately prepares young people for the world of work?
It is encouraging to see increasing investment in our education system especially the 14-19 age group. The focus on transforming our secondary and post-secondary education so that all young people achieve and continue learning until at least the age of 18 has to be a good thing for future employers.
Do you think young people in Wales have the work ethic to succeed in business?
Absolutely. Over recent years being in business has become a ‘cool’ thing and the word entrepreneur is much more widely understood by young people. It is also encouraging to see schools and colleges introducing new, innovative programmes so that students can experience enterprise and develop a sense of business acumen.
Would you move outside Wales to further your career?
Yes, but I’d come home on weekends!
At what age do you think you will retire?
Unsure at the moment, ask me again in 30 years.
