So you want to be a....software developer?

What does being a software developer involve?

A software developer, or engineer, is one of the most popular professions in IT. A software developer researches, designs and develops computer systems and programmes for clients or for internal purposes if working within a large organisation. Once the program is designed, it is then the software developer’s role to test and maintain it. Typically, a software developer will write new software programs, fault find, modify existing programs, ‘bolt together’ existing software products, maintain systems, write operational documentation and consult clients or colleagues concerning the preservation and performance of software systems. In certain jobs software developers will be required to replace an entire IT system but more commonly it will involve integrating ‘off-the-shelf’ programs into existing set-ups by modifying the program’s coding.

What skills do you need?

Due to the variety of the work involved, software developers need to have knowledge of a variety of computer programming languages and applications. It’s not just technical skills that are a requirement these days, however. IT workers need to add non-technical skills to their CVs to operate efficiently in today’s business environment. Skills requirements are becoming broader and the lines between traditional IT roles are becoming blurred. There is a need for a hybrid skill set which prioritises communication, negotiation and project-based skills on a par with technical knowledge.

What qualifications and training do you need?

A degree in a computer-related or business discipline is beneficial, for example, computer science, software engineering or business management. A HND/foundation degree in computer studies may also prove valuable when looking for jobs. In addition work experience is a must, together with evidence of technical competency, knowledge of various applications and computer coding, a logical mind, analytical skills and business acumen. There are recognised courses run by Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) and Oracle (www.oracle.com) that may enhance career prospects when combined with experience, while professional qualifications can be obtained through the British Computer Society (www.bsc.org).

What opportunities are there?

Software developers work within a broad range of organisations from specialist IT firms to public sector organisations with IT departments and the prospects will therefore depend on the type and size of organisation that you work for. Often there is the opportunity to move into more senior roles such as a senior software developer being responsible for a small team, others move into IT consultancy roles. Like with most jobs, the more experience you have, the easier it is to progress.

What is the salary like?

Like prospects, salaries for software developers vary depending on the size of the company and its location. Computer manufacturers and software houses tend to pay higher salaries.
