Businessman hits high note as trustee
Barry businessman James Emery has been appointed a trustee of Major Music.
After being involved with the charity for a number of years as a volunteer tutoring and mentoring groups of youngsters on guitar and vocals, music lover James Emery, managing director of COS – the Complete Office Solution – has now been appointed to look after the day to day running of the charity alongside seven other trustees.
Offering young people musical opportunities in Llantwit Major, Cowbridge and the rest of the Vale of Glamorgan, Major Music, which was re-launched last month with a big concert in St Donat’s Art Centre, meets once a week, providing young people with access to a variety of musical instruments including guitars, drums and pianos, as well as providing musical tutors, vocal coaches and mentors.
On being appointed James, 39, said: “I’m delighted to be made a trustee of Major Music. COS got involved with the charity originally as a sponsor, providing products and services free of charge to assist them with their fantastic work and when I then began to volunteer I quickly saw how much of an important role the charity plays in many young people’s lives. The work that Major Music does is fantastic, giving children throughout the Vale a focus on something positive and rewarding and nurturing the usual teenage love of music, that most of us feel at that age, and developing it.
"This is an exciting time for the organisation having just re-launched in February and I am really looking forward to developing what is already a great charity into something that is outstanding.”
Phil Kirkham, Chairman of Major Music said: "Major Music will shortly be celebrating its tenth anniversary, this in itself shows the dedication and enthusiasm from volunteers and mentors which makes the charity a resounding success.
"The Board is delighted to welcome James to his new role. He has played a very active role in the charity to date and his passion about music and business acumen will stand us in good stead as we take the charity on to the next level of success.”
A member of local band ‘Kelso’, James faces a number of challenges in his new role as a trustee. The first is campaigning to regain access to their home for the past 10 years, the Llantwit Major youth centre for their Tuesday evening sessions. The group currently meets in 'the hive' at St. Athan due to a delay in the Service Level Agreement for use of the Llantwit Major Youth Centre, by the Vale of Glamorgan Council. The temporary accommodation means a reduced number of youngsters are able to attend due to the limited space and there are increasing fears over the safety of the location due to the busy main road children have to cross.
Continued James: “Whilst we are very appreciative of the use of “the hive”, regaining access to the youth centre is our ultimate goal. It not only houses our purpose built recording studio but the centre has a bigger capacity which means that more children can be a part of Major music and develop their musical talents.”
