Bridgend businessman prepares to sting at rugby match

A Bridgend businessman is training for the toughest challenge of his life as he prepares to become a Wasps rugby player next month.

Jonathan Bennett, 37, CEO of Indigo, a Bridgend-based workplace services provider, will play in the London-based team’s legends side when they face Guernsey Select XV on 12th September in a bid to raise money for charity.

Starting alongside the likes of Lawrence Dallaglio and Serge Betsen, Bennett will participate in the charity match being held in Guernsey after bidding for the opportunity at the Wasps end of season dinner earlier this year.

Hoping to raise in excess of £10,000 for his chosen charity, George Thomas Hospice Care, Cardiff’s major provider of specialist palliative care to those suffering from cancer and other life threatening illnesses, Bennett is getting training tips from none other than Welsh rugby star Neil Jenkins.

On the challenge ahead Mr Bennett said: “I bid for the chance to play with the Wasps as I felt that not only would it be a good incentive to lose weight and get fit but I could also raise money for a worthwhile cause. Since learning that I would be playing alongside rugby greats such as Dallaglio, I have been training vigorously at my local gym and on a strict healthy eating regime, so far I have lost over a stone and will be keeping up the hard work until the big day.

“I have also been getting plenty of advice from Neil Jenkins. Having been capped for Wales 87 times in his career he has plenty of experience on the field and has been giving me lots of tips ready for the big game. Undoubtedly the game will test my personal fitness and ability however I am looking forward to the challenge!”

Supporting up to a 1000 patients in a year in the Capital City of Cardiff, the work of the specialist palliative care nurses, occupational therapists, Welfare Rights Officer, Bereavement counsellors and social workers of George Thomas Hospice is vital in continuing to support the needs of the local community.

On selecting George Thomas Hospice as his chosen charity Bennett continued: “Having recently visited the hospice and seen the work they carry out I am delighted to raising money for such an invaluable cause.”

Margaret Pritchard, Chief Executive of George Thomas Hospice Care said “We are thrilled that Jonathan has chosen to raise money for the hospice. With many people needing palliative care in south Wales, the money raised can help fund a specialist nurse who will be able to further assist patients who require round the clock care. Without the support from people like Jonathan we would not be able to offer our services free of charge. The money raised will undoubtedly make a huge difference to both patients and their families.”
