New trustee is welcomed on board

The Community Foundation in Wales, a philanthropy advice and grant-making charity operating across Wales, has appointed a new trustee to their board.

The managing director of freshbaked PR, Jonathan Hollins, 40, joins the board with over 20 years experience in the Welsh business community which he plans to put to good use in his new position.

Since it was established in 1999, the Community Foundation in Wales has distributed over £5m in grants throughout Wales. With the money for these coming from a wide variety of sources, including local individuals and businesses, Hollins’ role will see him using his contact book and PR experience to ensure these donations keep flooding in.

Since launching freshbaked PR just over a year ago Hollins and his team have quickly built a portfolio of over 20 clients including the South Wales Chamber of Commerce which Hollins fronted in the Cardiff region leading to the creation of Wales' first 'super chamber'. Many of these clients already actively participate in corporate social responsibility activity or make charitable donations, and the Community Foundation in Wales will be able to provide cost effective methods to efficiently deliver funds direct to the people and organisations that need them most.

Of the upcoming opportunity, Jonathan says: 'I am very honoured to have been offered a place on this board. The Community Foundation in Wales is the country's only philanthropically focused organization, and as such is able to help allocate the donations of the few to the needs of the many. For many of our benefactors, the real attraction of their giving is seeing the immediate impact that their donation makes in local Welsh communities.  I am really looking forward to getting involved as soon as possible, and hopefully putting my skills and experience to good use, in order to make a very effective contribution'.

Says CFiW's Chief Executive, Liza Kellet: 'We are very pleased to welcome Jonathan onto the board. The work we do is very important but getting the message out there about the private individuals, blue chip companies and public sector bodies we work with can be challenging in this economic climate, despite a long history of philanthropy in Wales. Jonathan's experience in tackling corporate communication issues will be invaluable to us as we work to raise our profile throughout Wales'.

In the past year, The Community Foundation in Wales has been responsible for distributing over £1.2m of funds to communities in Wales. Beneficiary groups range from Newport-based Crafts for Everyone, a social enterprise helping people with learning difficulties, to Friends of Central Park in Connah's Quay looking to reinvigorate their local community through volunteer engagement.

It has most recently launched the Newport Fund, resourced with private sector contributions as well as a collection of legacy funds previously under the administration of Newport City Council. Initial beneficiaries of the fund include, Friends of Newport Transport Bridge and bereavement group Hold Out a Hand who have set up a coffee shop for their clients.

Community Foundations are a worldwide concern, with their origins in the United States of America, home to great philanthropists including J. Paul Getty and Bill Gates. There are 55 Community Foundations in the UK, with Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales having single organisations with a national remit.
