New Devils season is off to a fast start with fans

As the global economy starts to show signs of recovery, Wales' only ice hockey team, The Cardiff Devils, is withstanding tough market conditions by achieving strong attendances during its first six games.

Fans of the Cardiff-based team have consumed the first home matches of the 2009/10 Elite League season building on the strong momentum it built during the 2008/09 season, the first year that Matt Burge, CEO of CommsDirect took over the reins.

Attendance at the first six matches was 27 per cent higher than after the first six matches of the last season, where Burge, who recently set up not-for-profit business consultancy Collateral Thinking, was instrumental in improving attendance figures by 17 per cent on the previous year.

Since launching the new generation Cardiff Devils last year, Mr Burge has made a number of improvements to the management and the team and there has been investment into improving the match night experience, rebranding the cardiffdevils.com website and introducing Devils TV for the very first time.

Added to this all of the team’s main sponsors from last season have renewed for another year and in some cases increased their investment, while new partners including title sponsor freshbaked have been brought on board.

He says: “We’ve had a tremendous start to the new season - attendance figures are up on last year, we have new sponsors in place and the team is performing well. When the economic downturn hit, we were acutely aware that the real effects would start to be felt this season, however thanks to our loyal supporter base, strong attendances achieved during the first six home games has provided some welcome degree of comfort.

“We’re also truly grateful to our sponsors for this year. It is extremely important for us to have the right companies working with us as we see it as more of a partnership rather than a sponsorship that has mutually beneficial opportunities for both parties involved and we know that without their support we couldn’t achieve this amount of success.

“Furthermore, if we maintain the progress we have made to date, we are on course for an amazing success story in a time of credit-crunch headline domination. Even more impressive is that attendances in our sport increase post-Christmas, meaning with continued marketing activity and positive business relationships, we are aiming for sell-out territory.”
