New initiative to inspire young people launched by Cardiff Devils

A programme to improve young people's fitness, self worth and well-being has been launched by the Devils Community Foundation (DCF), official charity of the Cardiff Devils Ice Hockey Club.

The ‘Changing Devils’ initiative is the latest scheme set up by the Foundation to improve confidence and focus the energies  of some of the community’s youngest members by introducing them to the game of ice hockey.

Set up in October 2008, the DCF supports the communities of south Wales through the promotion and delivery of ice hockey. Advocating healthy living, education and participation, while aiming to make a difference to the lives of those it supports, the foundation has been able to build positive relationships between the local community and Wales’s only professional ice hockey team.

Initially the programme will invite pupils from all primary schools in South Wales to attend a Devils match of their choice. It is hoped that by inviting young people to visit a game, the Foundation will encourage greater community involvement with the club and awareness of the game.

Brent Pope Head of the DCF said: “Ice hockey is such a unique sport known for its bravado, strength, power and skill. To be able to encourage young people to channel their energy and strength into something that engenders healthy living, team spirit and confidence is fantastic.”

The programme will work alongside a number of different community initiatives that have been set up by the DCF, including the Cardiff Devils Play the Game programme and the Adopt a School programme.

Mr Pope continues: “The ‘Changing Devils’ programme is just the beginning of what we, at the Foundation, are confident will be a successful and rewarding relationship between the Devils and the younger members of the South Wales Community. The scheme will allow us to engage and connect with participants and will complement the initiatives that the Foundation has already put in place.”

Strong working relationships with strategic partners including the South Wales Police and Cardiff County Council have already helped to heighten public awareness about the DCF’s work as well as to inspire greater involvement from a wider audience.

Shannon Hope, Director of Hockey at the Devils said: “Ice hockey is a family sport, which attracts audiences of all ages. In order for the Cardiff Devils to grow and develop, it is crucial that we maintain positive relationships within the community. The Devils Community Foundation is at the very cornerstone of this, ensuring not only that the players are seen as role models, inspiring and positively influencing our younger fans, but also offering initiatives which involve the entire community in an educational and inspirational way”.
