Cardiff man to lead Winter Olympics Ice Hockey commentary
A Cardiff man has been selected to lead the 2010 Winter Olympics Ice Hockey commentary.
Brent Pope, 36, head of the Cardiff Devils Community Foundation (DCF) and commentator for Cardiff Devils TV, has been selected by the BBC to perform the role of lead commentator for the Winter Olympics Ice Hockey Tournament.
The summons comes after BBC executives listened to commentary provided by Brent at recent Cardiff Devils home games as well as his commentary at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships 2008 in Ottawa.
Brent, who has experience in both British and Canadian ice hockey, has coached, commentated and played professionally and previously fulfilled the role of lead commentator at the Torino Winter Olympics in 2006.
More recently, Brent has turned his attentions to involving the youth of south Wales in the sport, as part of his role as head of Cardiff Devils own charity- Devils Community Foundation, where he works alongside organisations to tackle underlying social, emotional and financial issues facing young people in the community.
As commentator for the Games, Brent will be required to summarise events for viewers, produce up-to-date online blogs, conduct interviews, voiceover montages, and take part in studio analysis.
Commenting on his new challenge, Brent said: “The role requires a diverse multi-tasker, with an ability to inform and engage viewers and to sustain the fans’ excitement throughout the duration of the games. Ice hockey is the real showpiece event at the Winter Olympics so this tournament will be of epic proportions. Ice hockey does not get any bigger than this!
“To be asked to host the event is a great honour and the support I have received from the entire Cardiff Devils organisation has been fantastic. I look forward to representing the team with the energy and enthusiasm which the game deserves”.
Shannon Hope, Director of Hockey at the Cardiff Devils, added: “Not only is this good news for the Cardiff Devils, who Brent will be representing in Vancouver, but it is also great news for the city of Cardiff in general, with a worldwide audience tuning in. We wish Brent good luck and look forward to hearing his take on the 2010 Games”.
The Winter Olympics, which will be hosted in February of next year, will also involve sporting events such as bob-sleighing, speed-skating and figure skating.
