Millennium Stadium Trust give helping hand to little Devils
The Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust has granted £10,000 to the Devils Community Foundation (DCF), for the development of its new 'Changing Devils' project.
The DCF is the community arm of the Cardiff Devils and it was chosen by the Trust to receive financial aid in order to implement its new scheme, which will teach local school children about the advantages of a healthy lifestyle and will encourage them to focus their negative energies in a positive way.
Pupils between the ages of 10 and 13, from all primary schools across south Wales will be invited to attend a Devils match of their choice. The funding will also be used to encourage active participation in the sport, by introducing 50 children to it and offering them a chance to play ice hockey during the programme and beyond.
Those selected by the Devils Community Foundation to be involved in the programme will be chosen from the ‘at risk’ categories of children in the local area, who have experienced social exclusion, crime or family troubles.
Brent Pope, head of the Devils Community Foundation, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have received a grant from the Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust. To be chosen by the Trust as an organisation worthy of such a significant amount of funding is extremely humbling and is a tribute to the hard work of all those involved in the DCF.
“The Changing Devils scheme is about far more than ice hockey; it is about teaching young children to be determined, to think positively and to operate effectively as part of a team. The money we have received will help us to spread this message to so many deserving children across South Wales”.
The Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust receives its income from a levy on all tickets sold at public events held at the Stadium. The income raised is then granted to Welsh Community groups and organisations such as the Devils Community Foundation.
Russell Goodway, Chair of the Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust said: “I am delighted to be supporting such a significant project, which works with some of the most disadvantaged children in Wales. Projects like this are precisely what the Trust is all about; using sport to engage positively with those members of society who for many different reasons have been marginalised. I look forward to seeing the outcomes and to following the future developments of the Devils Community Foundation".
The DCF was set up in 2008 to work with partner organisations to respond to the needs of some of the most disadvantaged young people in South Wales. The ‘Changing Devils’ scheme is one of several programmes put into place by the DCF in its bid to bring the Devils organisation and the local community closer together.
