Cardiff Devils reveal brains as well as brawn
Three players from the Cardiff Devils ice hockey team
have revealed that they are embarking upon their Masters of Business Administration (MBA) qualifications at Cardiff University Business School, as well as continuing to play ice hockey professionally for the Cardiff Devils.
Devils stars, Mike Hartwick, Wes Jarvis and Scott Romfo, part of the Devils 2009/2010 Elite League Season line-up, attend classes each week at the business school, as well as completing assignments and undergoing examinations.
Scott Romfo, 28, who is focusing on marketing, said: “So far, balancing my sporting and schooling commitments has not been a problem. The support offered to me from the Devils has been great and I know that the door is always open to talk if I have any trouble managing my workload alongside the game”.
Mike Hartwick, 26, is studying with a focus on Finance, having previously attended Ivy League Institution Dartmouth College, in the USA, where he gained a double major in History and Economics. His decision to move to Cardiff was influenced by the city’s sporting and educational offerings. He commented:
“When I was given the opportunity to play in the UK, Cardiff was the city which stood out. Not only does Cardiff have a growing ice hockey fan base, but it also boasts an international Business School which rivals some of the best in the world. My goal eventually is to pursue a career in investment banking”.
Wes Jarvis, 30, who is now in his second season with the Devils, balances his ice hockey commitments, schooling timetable and family life. He lives in Cardiff with his wife and one-year-old daughter, Grace. Wes commented:
“Maintaining a stable balance between family, the game and university is difficult at times but I think it’s important for me to continue my education as an entirely different aspect of my life away from ice hockey”.
Upon graduation, all three players will gain a Masters qualification from the Business School.
Shannon Hope, director of hockey for the Cardiff Devils commented: “We are extremely proud of Mike, Wes and Scott. We encourage our players to broaden their horizons, be it through further education or through their individual careers and hobbies. We wish them the best of luck with their exams and are confident they will do as well off the ice, as they do on it”.
The players will receive the results of their 2009/2010 academic efforts in September.
