Independent launches manifesto with help of phantom
Independent candidate for Cardiff South & Penarth, George Burke, launched his manifesto today (Friday 16th April) with the help of International musical star, Peter Karrie.
The launch took place outside the Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay, in the heart of George Burke’s constituency.
If elected to represent Cardiff South & Penarth, George has pledged to improve the quality of life of older people, work towards stopping benefits for those who can work but will not, improve the UK’s position on the open boarder policy and reduce the fear of antisocial behaviour in his constituency.
His manifesto also addressed issues such as the economy, families, EC membership, education and citizenship.
The launch saw the turn out of a number of supporters, who will be backing George throughout the campaign.
Peter Karrie, who has played the part of the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera and Valjean in Les Miserable has agreed to help George Burke in his election campaign over the next three weeks, include taking part in talks and events, as well as canvassing throughout the constituency.
Commenting on the manifesto launch and campaign, Peter Karrie said: “It is admirable that George Burke is spending his life savings in a bid to put honesty back into politics, following the recent expenses scandal in the area.”
Putting honesty and integrity back into politics is essential if politicians want to regain the trust of voters. This is something that I feel very passionate about. I know that George will put the needs of his constituents first, whilst many other politicians will have to tow the party line.
He added: "George is an Independent candidate and therefore has no party baggage. His aims are honest and thought through, not just open promises. George Burke represents many ordinary people’s views on politics. Experts are predicting a hung parliament, so voting for an Independent like George Burke will hold more weight than ever before!
George Burke, 58, from Penarth, is currently a manager for the largest older people’s charity in Wales and will be campaigning to become MP for Cardiff South & Penarth.
Eight candidates have so far declared an interest in the Cardiff South and Penarth seat – a constituency that comprises Penarth, Sully, Lavernock and Llandough, and the Cardiff electoral divisions of Butetown, Grangetown, Llanrumney, St Mellons, Rumney, Splott and Trowbridge.
Aside from Independent, George Burke, those in the running for the 2010 election include Farida Aslam (Plaid Cymru), Robert Griffiths (Communist); Dominic Hannigan (Liberal Democrats); Simon Hoare (Conservative); Alun Michael (Labour); Matthew Townsend (Green); and Simon Zeigler (UKIP).
