Former Miss Wales to play in charity polo match

Welsh beauty and former Miss Wales, Amy Guy, is confirmed to be captaining a team at this summer's polo extravaganza in Cardiff Castle as organisers announce that the tournament will be a celebrity pro-am competition.

Guy, who has more recently been ‘Siren’ on Sky TV’s Gladiator series, will captain a polo team of three professional players at Polo in the Castle on Sunday 27th June 2010.

Organisers Fusion have announced that the polo tournament, in aid of Noah’s Ark Appeal, will be a celebrity pro-am competition in a bid to raise as much money as possible for the charity currently working to raise £7 million to fund an ‘open MRI scanner’ amongst other vital projects in phase two of the Children’s Hospital for Wales.

Originally from North Wales, Guy has represented Wales on five consecutive occasions in equestrian competitions, as well as being part of the Great Britain squad, and last year competed against glamour model Katie Price in a celebrity polo match at the British Open Show Jumping Championships in Birmingham.

Since being crowned Miss Wales in 2004, Guy has forged a successful career in the fitness and modelling industry. The 26-year-old, also a designer of Polistas polo clothing, said: “I am excited about playing polo in Cardiff Castle as it’s such an iconic Welsh landmark. I’ve been horse riding from a very early age and I’m currently regularly show jumping for my Modern Pentathlon training which I have my focus on hopefully for the  2012 Olympics. It’s going to be great fun playing against other celebrities and honing the skills I picked up last year while playing against some top professionals. I’ll be having some lessons at Cirencester Polo Club to ensure that come June I’m at my peak.

“I’m also really pleased to be helping to raise money for the Noah’s Ark Appeal which is a fantastic cause in Wales. The charity has come such a long way in the past ten years but still has so much more that it wants to do to equip and complete the second phase of the hospital and I’m hoping that people will flock to the polo match to show their support.”

Usually recognised as the ‘Sport of Kings’, ‘Polo in the Castle’ is set to attract several thousand people from Cardiff and the surrounding areas. Spectators will be able to enjoy three fast and furious matches between four teams, who will battle it out to win the inaugural ‘Polo in the Castle Cup’.

With 100 per cent of the profits made on ticket sales going to the Noah’s Ark Appeal, ‘Polo in the Castle’ is a key event in the charity’s 10th anniversary celebrations as it looks to raise a further £7m to equip and complete the second phase of the hospital.

Says organiser Victoria Ward from Fusion: “We aim to bring a new and fresh approach to the game of polo and create an event that is accessible to all. We are the only polo match to be played in Cardiff Castle this year and with such fantastic surroundings we have decided to add more glamour to the event by having a number of polo playing celebrities to captain the teams. We’re delighted to have Amy on board. She is a great ambassador for Wales and a great horse rider. As one of the fastest and most dangerous sports in the world, polo is a thrilling spectacle and in our arena version of the game spectators can also get closer to the action so it will be more fun and exhilarating to watch.

“We are delighted at the support we are receiving from everyone that has got behind this event - from sponsors, to polo players and paying guests to governing bodies such as HPA. I have been amazed at the speed of which the event is selling, we’ve already got 70 per cent sold, so thank you to everyone. I can assure everyone that attends that it will be a sensational event and one which will become a highlight in the calendars of the posh frock brigade and families alike for years to come.”
