Curry house produces 'Chopra Chapati' ahead of big game

A Cardiff based curry house has commissioned a local artist to put 'Chopra on a chapati' in a bid to show its support for the Bluebirds ahead of Cardiff City's championship final play off at Wembley this weekend.

India Spice on Cowbridge Road East has teamed up with budding artist Nathan Wyburn to create a “Chopra Chapati” to wish Michael Chopra and the team well ahead of Saturday’s game against Blackpool.

Created out of 24 chapatis, the masterpiece took three hours to make with the 26 year-old-striker’s face being carefully “painted” onto the chapati using red curry paste.

On commissioning the piece of art, India Spice restaurant owner, Ahmed Saleh said: “Being so close to the Cardiff City Stadium, we wanted to do something to show our support for the team ahead of the big game. This seemed the perfect way to drum up support.”

On creating the bespoke piece, art student Nathan, 20, from Ebbw Vale said: “I was thrilled to be asked by India Spice to create a ‘Chopra Chapati’ ahead of the big game this weekend. The Bluebirds have had a fantastic season and whatever happens this Saturday the team know they have the support of fans behind them, but let’s hope they win!”

A win against Blackpool this weekend, will see Cardiff City move up into the Premier League, earning the club an estimated £90m in additional revenue. It will be the first time Cardiff City has been in the highest division of the football league since 1962, the Bluebirds will become the first non-English team to participate in Premier League.

Added Ahmed: “I am thrilled with the finished result, Nathan has done a fantastic piece of work and I am delighted that we have been able to support one of the biggest games in Cardiff City’s history in such a unique way!

“I wish the Bluebirds the best of luck for the weekend and I am looking forward to watching them secure that place in the Premiership!”

Currently studying fine art at the University of Wales Institute, Nathan's other ‘famous’ subjects have included Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole and KFC's Colonel Sanders made from marmite, ketchup and syrup.

Continued Nathan: “We chose to paint Michael Chopra because he is currently at the top of his game, he has had a great season so far.”

Cardiff City fans that order any dish and a chapati on Saturday can get 10 per cent off their final bill.
