Something for the ladies
At the start of November the men of Wales threw out their razors in support of Grow a Grav.
While the men's efforts are still ongoing, the Welsh Rugby Players’ Association (WRPA) has decided it’s time to give something back to the long suffering women of Wales by offering them the chance to win a sought after pair of Only Men Aloud tickets.
Only Men Aloud are keen supporters of the Grow a Grav campaign and as well as donating tickets to their matinee concert in the CIA on Saturday 18th December, several choir members are also sporting Gravs for the month.
The campaign, which launched officially on Monday 1st November, has seen men from across Wales grow a ‘Grav’ beard in tribute to Ray Gravell and his famous facial hair. All the money raised will be split between the Welsh Rugby Players’ Association (WRPA) Benevolent Trust and the Ray Gravell and Friends Charitable Trust.
To be in with a chance of winning the tickets all people have to do is make a donation to the Grow a Grav Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/grow-a-grav between Friday 19th and Friday 26th November to be entered into the prize draw.
Only Men Aloud’s Andy Mulligan said: “We are only too happy to work with Welsh rugby and the WRPA, while also supporting two great causes. Grav was a big hero for all of us in the choir, he was passionate about all things Welsh, and we believe he would love this idea.”
President of the WRPA Rhys Williams added, “We have been thrilled with the level of support that we have had for our first campaign. The outpouring of love for Grav has been truly touching. Only Men Aloud have been great champions for the cause and we are especially grateful to them for their kind donation.”
Ray Gravell passed away in October 2007, aged 56. A former Llanelli, Wales and British Lions rugby player, Grav played during the most successful period in Welsh rugby's history, when he became known for his trademark beard and his powerful charges from midfield. His fame became even greater after he retired from playing in 1985 and embarked on an acting and broadcasting career which made him one of the best known faces and voices in the country.
The WRPA Benevolent Fund was set up in March 2010 with a £10,000 donation made by Team Wales to establish the Trust. The Trust hopes to be able to help players in need whether it is through financial aid, guidance or support.
Established in memory of one of Wales’ greatest ambassadors, The Ray Gravell and Friends Charitable Trust supports causes and individuals in west Wales that would have been close to Grav’s heart. Its aim is to ensure that the passion, energy and spirit of this great man continues through the work it does – protecting his love of and commitment to family life, sport, music, the arts, the outdoors, media and the Welsh language.
